Good software should solve a specific problem without turning the computer into a billboard. Start with what you actually need, then keep the list lean.
Start with the protection already built into Windows, then add focused tools only when they solve a real problem.
Built into Windows
The first security layer I recommend on a normal Windows PC.
Windows Security includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Windows Firewall, with real-time protection built into Windows. Keep it enabled and keep Windows updated unless you have a specific reason to use another security product.

Password Manager
A strong way to stop reusing the same passwords everywhere.
Bitwarden's free individual plan includes unlimited login storage, access across devices and a password generator. Paid plans add extra security and sharing features if you need them.

A flexible password manager with encrypted storage and multiple synchronization choices.
Sticky Password stores passwords and other private data in an encrypted vault and can autofill logins across supported browsers and devices. Its Premium tier adds synchronization and backup options, including cloud sync and local Wi-Fi synchronization.
People who want a traditional password manager with the option to control how their encrypted vault synchronizes between devices.
Malware Cleanup
A useful second-opinion scanner when a machine may already be infected.
The free version is designed for on-demand scanning and cleanup of existing malware. It is not the same as Malwarebytes' paid always-on protection, so I treat it as a cleanup and second-opinion tool rather than a replacement for real-time security.

Cloud Backup
Simple off-site backup for the files you would hate to lose.
Backblaze Computer Backup is designed to automatically back up unlimited data from a Mac or Windows computer, including physically connected external drives. It is backup—not a file-sharing or archival service.

File Archiver
Small, fast and dependable for ZIP, 7z and many other archive formats.
7-Zip is free open-source software with strong compression and support for a large range of archive formats. It can create ZIP and 7z archives and unpack many additional formats, including RAR.

Instant File Search
Find a filename on Windows dramatically faster than digging through folders.
Everything indexes filenames quickly, uses very few resources and updates its index in real time. The developer states that it runs offline with no telemetry or user-data collection.
Locating files when you remember the name—or part of it—but not where you saved it.
Disk Usage Analyzer
See exactly what is consuming space on a Windows drive instead of guessing.
WinDirStat scans drives and folders, then breaks storage usage down by folder, file type and visual disk maps. It can help you identify unexpectedly large files and folders before deciding what is safe to move or delete.
Finding what is filling an SSD or hard drive and tracking down large files, folders or duplicate-looking storage problems.
FTP & Cloud File Transfer
A straightforward file-transfer client for servers, hosting accounts and major cloud-storage services.
Cyberduck connects to FTP, SFTP, WebDAV and a range of cloud-storage providers including Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Microsoft Azure, OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox. The project is free/libre software and is supported through donations and store purchases.

Windows Maintenance
A Microsoft utility that puts common cleanup, storage and Windows maintenance tools in one place.
Microsoft PC Manager includes system cleanup, storage management, large-file tools, pop-up management, health checks and shortcuts to built-in Windows utilities. It is available through the Microsoft Store for supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs.
People who want a simple Microsoft-made dashboard for routine cleanup and maintenance without installing a third-party “PC optimizer” suite.
Drive Health
A quick way to check the health information reported by HDDs, SSDs and NVMe drives.
CrystalDiskInfo reads drive health and S.M.A.R.T. information and supports common HDD, SSD, USB, RAID and NVMe configurations. It is useful for spotting warning signs before a failing drive becomes a surprise.

Hardware Information
Deep hardware identification and live sensor monitoring in one utility.
HWiNFO can inventory hardware and monitor temperatures, voltages, clocks and other sensors in real time. HWiNFO 64/ARM64 is freeware for non-commercial use; commercial use requires the appropriate license.

Office Suite
A full office suite when you need documents, spreadsheets and presentations without another subscription.
LibreOffice includes Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base and Math. It is available for Windows, macOS and Linux and is a practical choice when Microsoft 365-specific collaboration is not required.

Email Client
A mature desktop email client for managing multiple accounts, calendars and contacts in one place.
Thunderbird is free and open source, with desktop versions for Windows, macOS and Linux. It can connect to common mail services using standard email protocols and works well for people who prefer a dedicated desktop inbox instead of keeping email open in browser tabs.

Professional photo, vector and page-layout tools together in one customizable desktop app.
Affinity combines pixel/photo editing, vector design, illustration and page-layout tools in one application. It is free for individuals with a free Canva account on Windows and macOS. Canva AI features inside Affinity require a premium Canva plan.

Font Manager
A clean font manager built for designers who need to browse, organize and activate large font libraries.
FontBase supports Windows, macOS and Linux and includes collections, watched folders, OpenType features, glyph browsing, Google Fonts access and font previews. It is especially useful when a design workstation has far more fonts than should stay activated all the time.

Image Editor
A capable free image editor for photo cleanup, compositing and pixel-based graphics.
GIMP is a cross-platform image editor for Windows, macOS and Linux with tools for photo manipulation, painting, selections, layers and many everyday graphics tasks.

Vector Graphics
Excellent free software for SVG artwork, line art, logos and scalable graphics.
Inkscape is a cross-platform vector editor built around SVG. It includes drawing, typography and Bézier tools and can work with formats such as SVG, PDF, EPS, AI and PNG.

Code & Text Editor
A polished editor for HTML, CSS, JavaScript, configuration files and much more.
VS Code runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. The core editor does not require an account, and its AI features are optional, so it remains useful even if you simply want a fast, extensible code and text editor.

Screen Recording & Streaming
The go-to free tool for screen recording, live streaming and multi-source video capture.
OBS Studio can record screens, windows, cameras, microphones and other sources into custom scenes for recording or live streaming. It is available for Windows, macOS and Linux and remains free and open source.
Tutorials, screen recordings, webinars, livestreams and any setup that needs multiple video or audio sources combined into one production.
AI Assistant
A flexible AI workspace for writing, research, troubleshooting, coding, file work and creative problem-solving.
ChatGPT can be used on the web and through official desktop and mobile apps. Depending on the plan and platform, it can work with documents, spreadsheets, images, code and other files, and can help with research, drafting, analysis and multi-step work.

Remote-control software can be extremely useful—and is also commonly abused by scammers. RustDesk and Quick Assist are legitimate tools, but only connect when you initiated the support request and you know who is receiving access.
Remote Desktop
A capable cross-platform remote desktop tool with an open-source client and optional self-hosted server.
DesignAlot uses RustDesk for Remote Desktop Assistance. RustDesk supports Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android and web access, and it also offers optional self-hosted server infrastructure. For support sessions, download RustDesk only from its official project links.
ARM64 is for Windows-on-ARM/Snapdragon PCs. MSI is mainly for managed deployment. x86-32 is legacy.

Remote Assistance
Microsoft's straightforward Windows tool for getting help from someone you trust.
Quick Assist lets another person view your screen and, only if you approve it, request control of the PC. Microsoft specifically warns users to allow connections only from people they trust and when they initiated the support interaction.

A Few Ground Rules
Software changes. Pricing changes. A program that is useful for one person may be unnecessary for another. I review this page periodically and prefer focused tools over generic “optimizer,” registry-cleaner or all-in-one driver-updater suites.
